How Can Ukraine Stop Russia From Taking Mariupol? | General Philip Breedlove

“We have done airlifts into enemy territory before. There is precedent for delivering directly to the people who are being attacked.”

General Philip Breedlove, NATO's Former Supreme Allied Commander for Europe, talks to Ayesha Hazarika about defending Mariupol.

Times Radio brings you the latest breaking news, expert analysis and well-informed discussion on the biggest stories of the day.

Saving Mariupol now is a bit late, surely. Supplies are nearly complete. No air or land supply support. 2500 troops in one main area, a steel works, that can be bombed and levelled. Two super bombs could do job. One limited nuclear bomb. A horrible end for brave solders. If taken prisoner, they know they have little hope to survive.  Now, would require massive external attack from fresh Urkraine fresh troops with supplies. As mentioned ..Critical missing element..  air drop of supplies. Do it.

It's a miracle that Mariupol has still not fallen to Russia. Every hour that Mariupol stands, Odessa gets another hour to prepare defensively.

Why was the drones not send in in the last weeks to clear those artilleries and tanks before sending in the infantry to help Maliupo fighters, my keyboard warrior thinking could be wrong, those heroes needed help weeks ago but its not getting there.

Zelinsky needs to start organizing an underground guerilla style resistance to take over once the military falls in various cities  with the soul purpose of making it impossibly painful to hold any city.  Organizing it now before cities start falling will make it insanely more effective.

As we say in the military: mass has its own special beauty? You just rephrased a quote attributed to Stalin, who is rumoured to have said: Quantity has a quality all its own. Oh, and that is just a rephrasing of a quote attributed to Napoleon: victory goes to the army with the big battalion. Which he probably didn't say. Instead, this is perhaps a much older phrase.

It’s really sad when a genocidal war criminal murderer of a dictator, tries to lay claim to what is not his, we should be doing more to help, including more equipment and supplies to help them defend and launch an offensive. Without supplies and logistics battles are lost . I pray and hope Mariupol and the Ukrainian people and forces can survive and resist Putin and the evil and hatred that he spreads . Slava Ukraini.

Unfortunately I feel that the Ukrainian government might be sacrificing Mariopol for time. I don’t think they have the men and resources to launch and maintain the kind of mass counter offensive needed to relieve the city. Kyiv and the defenders know that every day, every hour that Mariopol holds is more time for new supplies to arrive in the East and less time for the Russians to achieve their May 9th goal. I’d love to be proven wrong, but atm it looks like the city is doomed.
