Ukraine War: Heavy Weapons Heading to Ukraine?
Ukraine has requested more 'heavy weapons' from the United States, which has now agreed to supply howitzer-type artillery.
It is hoped that with new radar targeting, these relatively old guns could hit Russian targets up to 10 miles away from the firing point.
The M777 Howitzer is state-of-the-art. Just because the US has had 155mm howitzers since the mid-20th century doesn't mean they're anything like that gun on the screen. The 777 is fully digitized and very advanced, despite using the same size shell as the older cannons do.
M777 is not old! It is relatively new and was designed in the UK (BAE in Bath) and manufactured in USA. Everyone is confusing the adoption of the 155 millimeter projectile by USA in 1940’s. These are some of the most sophisticated towed howitzers in existence. However, they have a tube life of unknown duration left. Standard European guns are 152 mm.
The military training and support from the West will strengthen the Ukrainian resistance. Drone directed artillery can make each round of munition more accurate and deadly. However, the Ukrainians need training on the non Soviet Era weapons - and the Russians are not giving them much time to train. For the short term, the Ukrainian are best served with refurbished Russian Soviet Era weapons that they know and are already trained with...
